Iran’s Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence for Azerbaijani Embassy Attack Perpetrator
The Supreme Court of Iran has confirmed the death sentence for Yasin Huseinzadeh, the man responsible for the deadly terrorist attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran. Iranian judicial official Asker Jahangiri confirmed the ruling during a press conference, announcing that the verdict had been sent to the Tehran court for execution. The sentence is set to be carried out after Huseinzadeh’s parents meet with him.
The attack occurred on January 23, 2023, when Huseinzadeh breached the Azerbaijani embassy's security post in the Iranian capital. Armed with an assault rifle, he shot and killed the head of the embassy's security while injuring two other security personnel during the attack. Following the incident, the Azerbaijani embassy temporarily halted its operations in Tehran.
After months of diplomatic discussions between Azerbaijan and Iran, the embassy resumed its activities in July of the same year at a new location. The attack on the diplomatic mission strained relations between the two nations, with Azerbaijan strongly condemning the violence.
The death sentence and its swift judicial process signal Iran's commitment to addressing terrorism, though the execution itself remains pending the meeting between Huseinzadeh and his family. The incident remains a focal point in the ongoing diplomatic dynamics between Tehran and Baku.
