At least thirteen people have died and sixty-six have been injured following an explosion at Qatar's main liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing hub at Ras Laffan, authorities said on Sunday.
The blast occurred during the start-up of operations at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday evening, according to a statement from QatarEnergy.
The state-owned energy company said the incident triggered a fire, prompting the deployment of emergency response teams. The fire has since been brought under control, it added.
Qatar's Interior Ministry said the explosion was caused by a "technical accident" and stressed that there had been no gas leak posing a risk to public safety.
Searches are continuing for the 18 people reported missing. The Ministry said the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group, working alongside civil defence teams, was carrying out the search efforts.
QatarEnergy did not immediately say whether the explosion had caused damage to the Barzan facility, which supplies gas to Qatar's domestic market.
An eyewitness said they had earlier heard a loud explosion in the capital, Doha, located south of the Ras Laffan complex. The cause of the technical accident remains under investigation.
