U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender,” almost a week into the conflict with Tehran. Trump made the comments on social media on Friday (6 March), hours after the Iranian president said unspecified countries had begun mediation efforts.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said, “There will be no deal with Iran except UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER.
“After that, and the selection of a GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s), we, and many of our wonderful and very brave allies and partners, will work tirelessly to bring Iran back from the brink of destruction, making it economically bigger, better and stronger than ever before,” he added.
Earlier, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on X: “Some countries have begun mediation efforts,” but did not name any in particular.
"Let's be clear: we are committed to lasting peace in the region, but we have not the slightest hesitation in defending the dignity and authority of our country. Mediation should address those who underestimated the Iranian people and ignited this conflict," he added.
Trump’s remarks come a day after he said he demanded the right to assist in the selection of the Supreme Leader to replace Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in airstrikes organised by the U.S. and Israel on 28 February.
Meanwhile, Israel continued bombing Lebanon on Friday, after ordering the evacuation of the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut.
Israel also launched new strikes on Iran. Israeli Defence Forces said 50 of its warplanes had carried out an attack on a bunker beneath a compound where Khamenei was living before he was killed.
