Saudi Arabia has informed Iran that it will not allow its territory or airspace to be used for any military action against Tehran, according to two sources close to the kingdom’s government cited by AFP.
The message was conveyed directly to Iranian officials amid rising regional tensions and warnings from Washington that it could respond to the Iranian government’s crackdown on protests.
According to a source close to the Saudi military, Riyadh made clear it would not be part of any military action taken against Iran and would not permit the use of its territory or airspace for such purposes.
A second source close to the Saudi government confirmed that the message had been communicated to Tehran. The assurances come as Iran has warned it would strike U.S. military and shipping assets if it were subjected to a new attack.
The U.S. maintains a significant military presence in the Gulf, including assets based in Saudi Arabia, adding to concerns about potential escalation in the region.
