Türkiye is actively working to secure the safe passage of 200 civilians trapped in Gaza's tunnels, according to a senior official. This comes after Türkiye successfully facilitated the return of a deceased Israeli soldier, marking another step in its role as a mediator in the ongoing situation.
Türkiye is making efforts to ensure the safe passage of around 200 civilians trapped in tunnels in Gaza, a senior Turkish official revealed on Sunday. This follows the country’s recent success in facilitating the return of Hadar Goldin’s remains, an Israeli military officer killed during the 2014 Israel-Hamas conflict.
Goldin’s remains were handed over to Israel on Sunday after being retrieved by the Red Cross, marking the first such return of an Israeli soldier’s body in over a decade. The handover came after intense diplomatic work and was seen as an effort that reflected Hamas’ commitment to maintaining the fragile ceasefire that has been in place since last month.
Türkiye has played a pivotal role in facilitating this process, underscoring its close ties with Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, as well as its broader involvement in peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas. The Turkish official confirmed that Türkiye's diplomatic efforts helped to resolve the issue, stating:
“We successfully facilitated the return of Hadar Goldin's remains to Israel after 11 years of intensive efforts reflecting Hamas’ clear commitment to the ceasefire.”
However, Türkiye is also working to address a new humanitarian crisis. The 200 Gazan civilians, currently trapped in tunnels beneath the region, remain stranded amidst the ongoing conflict. The Turkish government is actively involved in diplomatic talks to find a solution that allows these civilians to escape the dangerous conditions within the tunnels, the official added.
Türkiye's Role in the Ceasefire
Türkiye signed the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, brokered with the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump, last month. This deal has been crucial in bringing temporary peace to Gaza and preventing further escalation. Türkiye’s role as a mediator has been pivotal, as the country has close relations with Hamas and has been vocal in its criticism of Israel's military operations in Gaza.
While Türkiye has championed the Palestinian cause and condemned Israel’s actions, it continues to push for humanitarian solutions to mitigate the impact of the conflict on civilians.
Efforts for Gaza’s Civilians
In addition to its diplomatic efforts, Türkiye has consistently called for measures to address the humanitarian needs of Gaza’s civilians. The country has been involved in relief efforts and has provided aid to Palestinians affected by the conflict. The safe passage of the trapped civilians remains a key priority for Türkiye, as it works to ensure that more lives are not lost in the ongoing crisis.
As the international community watches closely, Türkiye’s involvement remains crucial in maintaining the ceasefire and pushing for solutions to protect civilians on both sides of the conflict.
