The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced plans to provide technical assistance for a project titled "Integrated Solutions in Renewable Energy to Support the 'Green' Transformation in Turkmenistan" .
The initiative is designed to bolster Turkmenistan's environmental sustainability and support its role in the global shift toward renewable energy. A central focus will be on crafting a roadmap for solar energy adoption, including innovative concepts for urban development, such as the creation of "smart" and "green" cities like Arkadag.
Key project components include feasibility studies, assessments, and the launch of a pilot project for an urban solar power plant. This pilot initiative is expected to produce over four gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3,000 tons each year.
Currently, hydrocarbons dominate Turkmenistan’s economy, accounting for approximately 85% of exports. Transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar power is seen as a way to diversify the economy, lower carbon emissions, and tap into new export opportunities, including green energy corridors connecting Central Asia to Europe.
The project aligns with the ADB's broader strategy to support Turkmenistan’s sustainable development. It will include training programs for government officials, private sector participants, and local communities on renewable energy technologies.
Slated for implementation by 2026, the initiative aims to establish a foundation for integrating renewable energy across urban and rural areas of Turkmenistan. It also complements ongoing efforts to enhance energy efficiency and support a low-carbon transition.
The project marks a significant step forward in Turkmenistan’s pursuit of environmental sustainability and energy independence.
