UN Secretary-General António Guterres is set to visit Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 3 August, to meet with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

A major focus of his visit will be the signing of an agreement to establish the UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan, based in Almaty.

The agreement will be signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu alongside UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua.

This initiative highlights Kazakhstan’s increasing leadership role in fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development policies throughout Central Asia and Afghanistan.

The new center will coordinate efforts on key economic, social, and environmental goals across the region.

During his visit, Guterres is expected to stress the importance of renewed global cooperation to tackle challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and inclusive development.

This will be Guterres’s third visit to Kazakhstan as UN Secretary-General. In 2024, the UN provided more than $37 million in development aid to Kazakhstan, supporting initiatives in economic growth, healthcare, education, human rights, environmental sustainability, and gender equality through partnerships with local institutions and international organizations.
