A senior Iranian military officer warned that American troops will become ‘food for sharks’ on Sunday if the U.S. launches a ground offensive in Iran. The threat came as contingents of U.S. Marines began to arrive in the Middle East, with thousands expected to be deployed in the region.

Iran braces itself for U.S. ground attack

Iran responded to reports of the U.S. getting ready for a ground offensive with threats on Sunday.

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that the Pentagon was preparing for weeks of possible ground operations in Iran, citing U.S. officials.

Iranian Military Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Zulfiqari issued a defiant video statement warning that any ground offensive would result in U.S. troops being humiliated and taken prisoner.

American soldiers would become "food for the sharks in the Persian gulf,” Zulfiqari added.

The U.S. Military said late on Saturday that two contingents of U.S. Marines had arrived in the Middle East, with thousands expected to be deployed in the region.

Pope says God rejects prayers of leaders who wage war

In unusually strong remarks, Pope Leo used his Palm Sunday sermon to criticise leaders who wage wars and have “hands full of blood.”

Speaking at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City, he said Jesus cannot be used to justify war and “rejects violence”.

The Pope didn’t name any leaders, but has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and criticised airstrikes as indiscriminate.

Iran threatens to attack Israeli and U.S. linked universities

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday warned that U.S. and Israeli-linked universities in West Asia are “legitimate targets,” in retaliation for attacks on Iranian universities.

The IRGC accused the U.S. and Israel of repeatedly bombing Iranian universities, including the Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran, in a statement carried by the semi-official Fars News Agency,

“From now on, all universities of the occupying entity [Israel] and American universities in West Asia will be considered legitimate targets," it said.

The IRGC warned staff and students at so-called U.S.-linked universities in the region, as well as nearby residents, to stay at least one kilometer away from the institutions for their safety.

Meanwhile, Iranian media published a list of industrial sites in Israel and Gulf states that it could target in retaliation for a U.S.-Israeli strike which hit Iran's Khuzestan Steel Company, forcing a suspension of operations at the plant.
