Northern India Monsoon death toll exceeds 100

Monsoon rains in northern India has pushed the death toll past 100, claiming the lives of 104 people in in Himachal Pradesh, injuring 189, and left 35 missing, according to officials.

According to the Emergency Operations Centre, 15 fatalities were caused by cloudbursts and eight by flash floods, with others resulting from road accidents and drowning.

Monsoon season in India typically begins in June and lasts until September.

The severe weather has also led to the deaths of at least 22,690 animals and poultry.

In response to the widespread damage, the Himachal Pradesh government has requested federal assistance.

State Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met with India’s Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Tuesday and called for a special relief package for the state.
