Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spotlighted Italy's leadership in nuclear fusion at COP29, calling it a transformative step toward global climate goals.
Meloni commended Azerbaijan’s presidency for its role in driving efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C and adapt climate finance targets. She emphasized the need for global cooperation between developed and developing nations to achieve meaningful progress.
Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s pledge to the climate fight, announcing over €4 billion from Italy’s climate fund earmarked for African climate initiatives and substantial support for the Green Climate Fund and Loss and Damage Fund.
She outlined Italy’s goals, aligning with the 2030 Dubai targets to triple renewable capacity and double energy efficiency, underscoring the need for a balanced energy mix. This approach, she stated, includes renewables, biofuels, hydrogen, and nuclear fusion, embracing technology neutrality for a resilient energy transition.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of energy diplomacy, particularly between the Global North and South, and highlighted Italy’s "Mateplan for Africa," which promotes green energy infrastructure and peer-to-peer cooperation across the continent. Through its G7 presidency, Italy supports initiatives like "Energy for Growth in Africa" to boost green energy development.
