Cyclone Murasu struck India's eastern coast on Tuesday, bringing powerful winds and forcing thousands to evacuate, just a week after another deadly storm battered the region, the country's weather department said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the severe cyclonic storm made landfall in the south-eastern state of Andhra Pradesh between 03:30 and 05:30 local time, with winds of 100–110 kilometres per hour and gusts reaching 120 kilometres per hour.

No deaths or injuries have been reported, but the storm has uprooted trees and electricity poles, according to Prakhar Jain, managing director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority.

Thousands evacuated as storm strikes

Authorities began evacuations on Monday, with plans to move around 30,000 people to safety in Andhra Pradesh, one of the areas directly in the cyclone's path.

Cyclone Murasu formed over the Bay of Bengal, a region prone to powerful tropical cyclones that have caused widespread destruction along India's eastern coast.

The IMD forecast that Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Tamil Nadu would bear the brunt of the storm.

Second cyclone in a week

Murasu is the second cyclone to strike the region within a week, following Cyclone Arnab, which killed at least six people.

Arnab made landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday and was classified by the IMD as a very severe cyclonic storm.
