Vodafone Idea is in talks with Elon Musk’s Starlink to expand connectivity in rural India. This move follows deals by rivals Airtel and Jio, as the telecom giant aims to leverage satellite technology to reach underserved areas and provide cost-effective broadband solutions.
Vodafone Idea (VODA.NS) is exploring potential partnerships with satellite communication providers, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, to expand its services across India, the company revealed on Wednesday. This announcement comes a week after Vodafone Idea’s competitors, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, struck deals with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s internet services to India.
The telecom giant aims to provide coverage in underserved areas where satellite technology could offer significant benefits. "Our strategy is to provide services in areas where satellite makes perfect sense," said Jagbir Singh, Vodafone Idea’s Chief Technology Officer. The company is also looking to deliver fixed wireless broadband services in rural areas and smaller towns, where the cost of traditional infrastructure is prohibitive.
Shares of Vodafone Idea rose nearly 5% following the announcement. Starlink’s agreements with Airtel and Jio will allow the Indian operators to stock Starlink’s equipment in retail stores, granting Starlink direct access to thousands of outlets across the country. However, the deals are contingent on obtaining the necessary government approvals before operations can begin in India.
As the Indian telecom market becomes more competitive, Vodafone Idea’s push to collaborate with Starlink reflects a growing focus on expanding rural and remote connectivity.
