TikTok moderates content in more than 70 languages, including Azerbaijani, using a combination of artificial intelligence and human reviewers, a company representative has said.

TikTok's Head of Government Relations for Eastern Europe, Diana Ryan, told the Shusha Global Media Forum that the social media platform uses both AI and human moderation systems to review content.

Ryan, who also serves as the social media app's Head of Public Policy for Eastern Europe, made the remarks on the second and final day of the fourth edition of the forum, which brought together nearly 160 media representatives, policymakers and experts from 53 countries.

“Every piece of content that’s being uploaded to Tiktok is reviewed through a combination of advanced technology and human systems, and of course we do use AI… We moderate in over 70 languages around the globe, with [the] Azerbaijani language being one of them.”

Ryan added that the platform, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, had removed more than 600,000 videos that violated its guidelines during the first quarter of the year.

Forum focuses on peace and trust

The theme of this year's forum was The mission of media in promoting peace: Restoring truth and rebuilding trust.

Hikmət Hacıyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, emphasised the role of the media in combating disinformation and promoting dialogue during an address at the event on Tuesday.

“Digital platforms have given billions a voice. Yet they have made it harder to distinguish facts from falsehoods,” he said.

“In this environment, media is no longer simply reporting events, it has become a pillar of national resilience, dialogue and international understanding.”

Discussions on AI and disinformation

Sessions on Tuesday focused on disinformation, media literacy and the role of AI, among other topics.

The Shusha Global Media Forum opened on Monday and included a question-and-answer session with Azerbaijan's President, Ilham Aliyev.
