Taiwan raises its military alert as China boosts its presence near the island, following President Lai Ching-de’s recent Pacific trip. Tensions between the two sides continue to escalate.
China has set up seven temporary airspace zones around Taiwan and deployed naval and coast guard vessels in the region, following the head of Taiwan's administration's recent trip to Hawaii and Guam, which China viewed as a provocation. In response, China created airspace zones off Fujian and Zhejiang provinces and stationed nearly 90 ships near Taiwan, prompting Taiwan to activate "combat readiness exercises" and raise concerns over China’s "grey-zone tactics," such as frequent air and sea missions.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that China aims to disrupt the international order, stating that China is the only country with the intent and growing capability to change the rules-based international order.
China defended its military activities, claiming they are a necessary response to Taiwan’s actions, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stating that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory and that China will firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
