The U.S. Senate on Friday rejected a Democratic-led effort to block President Donald Trump from launching further military action against Iran without congressional approval.

The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate voted Friday to reject a Democratic attempt to restrict President Donald Trump’s ability to take additional military action against Iran.

The war powers resolution, which would have required Trump to seek congressional approval before launching new hostilities, failed in a 53 to 47 vote.

The vote came just hours after Trump said he was considering further airstrikes on Iran.

All senators had cast their votes, but the roll call was being held open as of late Friday.

The resolution followed weeks of heightened tensions after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iran’s subsequent missile attacks on Israeli and U.S. targets.

Democrats argued that congressional oversight was needed to prevent further escalation. Republicans said the measure would limit the president’s ability to respond quickly to security threats.
