At least 11 people have died after a landslide triggered by heavy rain struck parts of northwestern Colombia, local authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The landslide hit crowded neighborhoods in Medellin and the nearby town of Bello, burying several homes. At least 15 people remain missing.
Emergency teams in Bello and Medellin are using dogs, drones, and other equipment to search for survivors. Over 60 homes in Medellin have been evacuated due to structural damage, according to Mayor Federico Gutiérrez.
In Bello, more than 1,300 people have taken shelter in schools, community centers, and a swimming pool, according to Mayor Lorena González Ospina.
The flooding began early Tuesday after intense rainfall caused streams to overflow, sweeping through streets with debris and mud.
Landslides are common in this region of Colombia during the rainy season from April to November.
Colombia’s Weather Service forecast light rain on Wednesday.
