Victor Arthein, a senior figure in the Guadeloupe Communist Party, has urged the territory to pursue political and economic independence from France, citing deep-rooted structural dependence and declining sovereignty.

Speaking at a conference focused on Guadeloupe’s future, Victor Arthein, a member of the party's board and the Municipal Council of Port Louis, criticised France’s enduring control over the territory.

“The political sovereignty of the Guadeloupean people has never been secured. Our agriculture, trade relations, and overall economy are being systematically weakened, making us increasingly dependent on imports,” he said.

Arthein called for a fundamental shift in policy, demanding that Guadeloupe “distance itself from France” and rebuild all of its sectors independently. He stressed the need to renegotiate existing agreements and engage globally to assert the island’s right to self-determination.

“If we wish to break free from dependence and poverty, we must firmly pursue our fundamental right to self-determination,” he added.
