Greek authorities have arrested a Georgian woman suspected of accidentally causing one of the wildfires devastating the island of Chios by discarding a cigarette, amid ongoing efforts to control the fires.
The wildfires, which began on Sunday, have burned approximately 10,000 acres of mostly bush and pasture land over three days. While the fires were largely contained by Wednesday, hundreds of firefighters continue to work to prevent flare-ups and fully control the situation.
Greece faces frequent wildfires during its hot, dry summers, and experts warn that climate change is intensifying the severity of such blazes. In response, the government has increased firefighting resources, including recruiting a record number of firefighters and receiving assistance from European countries.
