Amazon announced on Thursday, December 5, that it had successfully conducted its first test of delivery drones in Italy, marking the country as the first in Europe where the e-commerce giant plans to introduce this service.
The test took place on Wednesday, December 4, in San Salvo, a town in Italy's central Abruzzo region.
"We continue to collaborate with Italian authorities to fulfill all necessary requirements to launch the service next year," Amazon stated.
The company had previously indicated plans to roll out drone deliveries in both Italy and Britain by late 2024.
In August, the UK’s aviation regulator selected six projects, including one by Amazon, to explore the use of drones for deliveries, infrastructure inspections, and emergency services.
Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery service, which debuted in December 2022, is currently operational in select areas of Texas and Arizona in the U.S. and is gradually expanding, a company representative told Reuters.
