Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s multi-day wedding in Venice is making headlines—not just for its celebrity guest list and luxury, but also for the backlash it has sparked among local activists.
The fourth richest person in the world, Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez began their lavish three-day wedding celebration in Venice on Thursday, with a guest list including Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Queen Rania of Jordan, and the Kardashian sisters. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner arrived earlier for sightseeing.
Around 250 high-profile guests will attend, with many seen entering the cloisters of Madonna dell’Orto on Thursdsay evening for the open-air welcome.
However, the $50 million event has stirred local protests, with activists accusing the billionaire couple of symbolising the "sell-off" of Venice. A banner reading “The 1% ruins the world” was unfurled in St Mark’s Square as part of the demonstrations.
Bezos and Sanchez have donated more than one million euros to protect Venice’s fragile lagoon.
The couple is staying at the luxury Aman hotel and will hold a symbolic ceremony on San Giorgio Island on Friday.
Celebrations will conclude with a gala at the Arsenale on Saturday.
City officials defended the event, saying high-end tourism supports the local economy better than mass tourism.
