The World Bank has approved a $640 million loan to Bangladesh to help improve gas supply security and reduce dangerous air pollution in urban areas.
The $350 million Energy Sector Security Enhancement Project will help Petrobangla secure affordable financing to stabilize gas supplies. The $290 million Bangladesh Clean Air Project will focus on reducing urban air pollution through improved emissions control and cleaner public transport.
The initiative includes deploying 400 electric buses to replace older diesel fleets, aiming to cut harmful PM2.5 emissions by over 2,700 metric tons annually. The World Bank emphasized that these projects are crucial for economic growth and public health, as air pollution in Bangladesh causes more than 159,000 premature deaths and billions of lost workdays.
