Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced the end of a curfew imposed on downtown Los Angeles following last week's Anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests, citing its success in maintaining order.

The curfew was put in place to curb crime in the wake of raids on undocumented migrants that prompted the demonstrations.

The restrictions began on 10 June and were effective from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and covered a one-square-mile area and was implemented to prevent violence and looting amid protests.

In a statement on 17 June, Bass praised the measures for their effectiveness.

“The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, have been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who do not care about the immigrant community,” she stated.

Bass emphasized her readiness to reinstate the curfew if necessary.

“I am lifting the curfew effective today, and as we continue quickly adapting to chaos coming from Washington, I will be prepared to reissue a curfew if needed. My priority will continue to be ensuring safety, stability and support in the Downtown neighbourhoods.”
