US President Donald Trump said he is seeking a complete end to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, dismissing ceasefire prospects and warning Tehran against targeting American forces amid escalating conflict with Israel.
US President Donald Trump said early Tuesday that he is pursuing “a real end” to Iran’s nuclear program, emphasizing that Tehran must “give up entirely” on its nuclear ambitions and cautioning that any threat to US troops would provoke a severe response.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after the G7 summit in Canada, Trump made clear that he is not advocating for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Iran hostilities. “I didn’t say I was looking for a ceasefire,” he said, as quoted by CBS News reporter Jennifer Jacobs.
“The Israelis aren’t slowing up their barrage on Iran,” Trump added. “You’re going to find out over the next two days. Nobody’s slowed up so far.”
Amid growing speculation over possible US involvement in the conflict, Trump issued a stern warning to Iran: “They know not to touch US troops. We’d come down so hard if they do anything to our people.”
He remained vague about sending envoys such as Vice President JD Vance or adviser Steven Witkoff to engage Iranian officials, stating, “I may. Depends what happens when I get back.”
Asked about potential evacuations in Tehran, Trump said his concern was ensuring people’s safety. He declined to comment on whether US military leadership had presented options for a direct US strike should Iran target American bases. “I can’t tell you that,” he said.
While he noted that the congressional “Gang of Eight” would be briefed on developments, Trump suggested it was not yet critical: “It’s not necessary at this stage.”
He also hinted at hopes that the Israeli campaign might achieve US objectives regarding Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, stating, “I hope the program is wiped out long before that.”
Tensions between Iran and Israel flared after Israeli forces launched major airstrikes Friday on Iranian military and nuclear sites, prompting retaliatory missile strikes from Tehran.
Iran says the Israeli assault has killed at least 224 people and wounded over 1,000, while Israeli officials report 24 fatalities and hundreds of injuries from Iran’s attacks.
