Senator Bernie Sanders announced plans to introduce legislation prohibiting the use of federal funds for any US military action against Iran without explicit congressional authorization, warning against being drawn into what he called Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s “illegal war.”
Senator Bernie Sanders on Saturday declared he will propose legislation to bar federal funds from being used for any US military engagement against Iran without direct approval from Congress.
“The United States must not be drawn into Netanyahu’s illegal war against Iran,” Sanders said on X, stressing the need for Congressional oversight on any military decisions.
He added, “I will be introducing legislation to prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Iran without specific Congressional authorization, with an exception for self-defense.”
Sanders, a frequent critic of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military policies in Gaza, condemned Israel’s recent unilateral airstrike on Iran as a dangerous escalation that could ignite a wider regional conflict.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns in Washington over possible US involvement following Israel’s large-scale airstrikes early Friday targeting Iranian nuclear and missile facilities, which killed senior military commanders and scientists.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against Israel later that day.
