Romania deployed fighter jets early Thursday after Russian drone strikes targeted Ukraine’s Vylkove region near the Romanian border, though no airspace violations were detected.

Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base in Borcea early Thursday as Russian drones approached the country’s border during overnight strikes on southern Ukraine, the Defense Ministry announced.

The attacks reportedly targeted civilian and port infrastructure in Ukraine’s Vylkove region, close to the river border with Romania.

Romanian authorities issued emergency alerts to residents in nearby border areas as a precaution, though no unauthorized entry into Romanian airspace was recorded by radar systems.

The Defense Ministry confirmed that the jets conducted surveillance and airspace protection missions. Investigations were launched in potentially impacted areas, and NATO allies were informed in real time of the developments.

The incident marks another escalation in regional tensions as cross-border risks persist due to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
