Ethiopia’s Health Ministry confirmed on Saturday the country’s first death linked to mpox, with five more cases still active. No new infections or recoveries were reported in the past 24 hours.
The initial cases were detected last week in Moyale, a town in the Oromia region near the Kenyan border. The infections involved a family of three, including two parents and an infant, all testing positive after showing symptoms.
The source of the infection is still under investigation. As of May 31, Ethiopia has conducted 15 mpox tests, mostly in areas with reported symptoms or close contacts.
The government is increasing surveillance in border towns and running public awareness campaigns. Despite the outbreak, daily life in Moyale and surrounding areas remains mostly unchanged.
