U.S. President Donald Trump accused China of violating a key trade agreement on tariffs and minerals, warning of potential new actions amid rising tensions.
Donald Trump claimed that China had "totally violated" a recent Geneva agreement to pause mutual tariffs and ease trade restrictions on critical minerals. He said the temporary truce, struck in May, was aimed at preventing economic turmoil in China, but now accused Beijing of backtracking.
While Trump didn't detail the alleged violation, U.S. officials cited delays in Chinese rare earth mineral exports. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer criticized China's "slow-rolling" of the deal, while China's embassy pointed to U.S. export controls as the real obstacle. Talks between the two sides appear to have stalled, and stock markets dipped following Trump’s post. Meanwhile, a U.S. court temporarily blocked some of Trump’s previous tariffs, and Japan continues to push the U.S. for tariff relief in separate negotiations.
