Cambodia PM urges patience in border dispute with Thailand after soldier’s death

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said Saturday that the border conflict with Thailand “must be resolved with patience and through legal and diplomatic channels.”

His comments came after a Cambodian soldier was killed earlier this week in a clash along the border.

Hun Manet stressed that border issues are complex and should only be taken to international courts as a last resort, warning that “once it reaches the court, negotiations will no longer be possible.”

He made the remarks while speaking to Cambodians in Tokyo, where he has been visiting since Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Thailand plans to close six permanent and 10 temporary border checkpoints with Cambodia to protect people and businesses and to reduce the risk of further clashes, according to broadcaster Thai PBS citing security sources.

Former Cambodian Premier and current Senate President Hun Sen has called for Phnom Penh and Bangkok to bring internationally recognized maps of the disputed “Emerald Triangle” to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to resolve the ownership issue.

The deadly altercation took place Wednesday in the Emerald Triangle area.
