Finnish PM urges US to impose tougher sanctions on Russia
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has called on the United States to implement tougher sanctions against Russia, as the EU prepares its next sanctions package.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Washington next week to meet U.S. President Donald Trump.
This will be their first face-to-face meeting since Merz became Germany’s leader on May 6.
The meeting, scheduled for Thursday at the White House, will focus on key issues including the war in Ukraine, the Middle East situation, and trade relations between Germany, the EU, and the U.S.
Since taking office, Merz has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to support Ukraine and push for a ceasefire. He recently hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berlin.
Trade tensions are also high. Trump had threatened to impose a 50% tariff on EU goods starting Sunday but delayed the deadline to July 9. Germany wants to ease these tensions and protect economic ties.
