Canada is grappling with a surge in wildfires, prompting states of emergency in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, as a major blaze near Churchill Falls continues to burn out of control despite efforts by firefighting crews and water bombers.

Authorities have deployed firefighting crews and two water bombers to combat a wildfire near Churchill Falls, estimated at 170 hectares and located approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) east of the town.

According to CBC, citing Craig Coady, Director of the wildfire program at the provincial forestry department, the immediate threat to Churchill Falls is diminishing, though the fire remains classified as out of control due to persistent dry conditions.

Amid escalating wildfire activity across central and western Canada, Manitoba declared a state of emergency on Wednesday (May 28), ordering evacuations in northern and eastern regions. Saskatchewan followed on Thursday (May 29), also declaring a state of emergency as it battles a critical situation involving more than 200 wildfires this spring. Premier Scott Moe reported 17 active blazes and the evacuation of 15 communities.

Thick smoke was observed around Weyakwin on May 28, consistent with earlier scenes of wildfire spread. Reuters verified the location and timing of the footage through metadata analysis.

The situation underscores the growing severity of Canada’s wildfire season, prompting widespread emergency measures across multiple provinces.
