Strong winds and torrential rain are lashing Hawaii after Hurricane Lala skirted the Big Island, prompting warnings of flooding, mudslides, and storm surge.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green said Lala came closest to the Big Island near South Point, where one person died in a weather-related car accident.
Lala reached hurricane strength on Saturday, producing winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) that later peaked at 146 km/h (91 mph). The storm could bring up to 63 cm (25 inches) of rain and generate a 0.91 metre (3-foot) storm surge.
Tens of thousands of people were left without power as officials urged residents to prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions.
On the Big Island, resident Cynthia Totty-Hefley said she was more worried about the ocean reaching her home than falling coconuts.
“What I'm most worried about is the ocean coming into my house. I'm a little anxious.”
Authorities opened emergency shelters as the storm moved westward. A temporary shelter at Waiakea High School in Hilo was preparing to accommodate up to 200 people.
Warnings extend across Hawaii
A hurricane warning is in effect for the Big Island, while Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Lanai, Kauai and Niihau are under tropical storm warnings.
The National Hurricane Centre said that as of 17:00 local time on Saturday (03:00 GMT Sunday), Lala's eyewall was “brushing the southern portion of the Big Island”.
“Damaging winds and heavy rain will persist across the Big Island throughout tonight and spread westwards across the smaller islands on Sunday,” it said.
