More than 183,000 customers across Hawaii were without power as Tropical Storm Lala weakened after bringing hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, and flooding to the islands.
On Oahu, the state’s most populous island, outages had fallen from more than 220,000 to around 130,000 by Sunday morning, according to state officials. Hawaii Governor Josh Green said authorities had received reports of at least 100 homes damaged.
Lala reached hurricane strength on Saturday, with sustained winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) before gusts peaked at 146 km/h (91 mph). The storm was forecast to bring up to 63 cm (25 inches) of rain and a storm surge of up to 0.91 metres (3 feet).
Hawaiian Electric said restoration efforts were being hampered by strong winds that toppled trees, while heavy rainfall caused flooding on roads.
A state official said parts of Hawaii had experienced flash flooding “as we've never seen”.
State officials urged residents to remain indoors after at least one person was reported dead in a car-related accident.
“It’s not a day to go to the beach,” one official said during a press conference on Sunday morning.
Around 117 people were staying in emergency shelters as of Sunday morning.
On the Big Island, resident Cynthia Totty-Hefley said she was particularly concerned about rising seawater reaching her home.
“What I'm most worried about is the ocean coming into my house. I'm a little anxious,” she said.
Authorities opened emergency shelters as Lala moved westwards. A temporary shelter at Waiākea High School in Hilo was preparing to accommodate up to 200 people.
A hurricane warning remains in effect for the Big Island, while Maui,
Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe, Oʻahu, Lānaʻi, Kauaʻi and Ni‘ihau are under tropical storm warnings.
“Damaging winds and heavy rain will persist across the Big Island throughout tonight and spread westwards across the smaller islands on Sunday,” the National Hurricane Centre said.
All airports have reopened, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, although state officials advised travellers to check with their airlines for the latest updates.
