Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday welcomed a U.S. trade court ruling that blocked most of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, many of which targeted Canadian exports.
Addressing lawmakers in the House of Commons, Carney said the ruling affirmed Canada’s longstanding position on the issue. “This decision is consistent with Canada's longstanding position that the ... tariffs were unlawful as well as unjustified,” he stated.
The court ruling, issued earlier this week, halts the implementation of a broad set of tariffs introduced by the Trump administration that had sparked concern among U.S. allies and trading partners. Canada, which had been among the most affected, had vigorously opposed the measures both diplomatically and through legal channels.
Carney’s remarks signal Canada’s intent to continue defending its economic interests amid a shifting trade environment in North America, and come as Ottawa works to ensure that Canadian businesses are shielded from further disruptions tied to U.S. trade policy shifts.
