Ukrainian President Zelenskyy met German Chancellor Merz in Berlin to push for stronger support and discuss ceasefire efforts amid renewed Russian attacks and rising frontline tensions.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Berlin on Wednesday to meet newly appointed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, aiming to strengthen support for Ukraine and advance stalled ceasefire efforts.
Chancellor Merz welcomed Zelenskyy with military honors and pledged continued support, emphasizing that Ukraine must keep defending itself as Russia shows no real interest in peace. Unlike his predecessor Olaf Scholz, Merz supports Ukraine’s right to strike inside Russian territory and has committed to a stronger leadership role.
While no new weapons deliveries were announced, Germany has adopted a “strategic ambiguity” policy, avoiding public details of military aid. Both leaders agreed to continue private discussions as international pressure builds for a negotiated resolution.
