Sudan faces health crisis as cholera spreads
Sudan is on the brink of a serious health disaster as cholera and other deadly diseases spread across the country, warns aid group International Rescue Committee (IRC).
Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak, with more than 170 people dying and 2,700 infected in just one week, according to the Health Ministry.
The majority of cases—around 90%—are in Khartoum State, where recent fighting has disrupted access to clean water and electricity.
Since the outbreak began, over 60,000 cholera cases and more than 1,600 deaths have been reported nationwide. Sudan declared cholera a national epidemic in August 2024.
The country remains in deep crisis, with ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. The war has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced over 15 million, while some researchers estimate the real death toll may be closer to 130,000.
