Trump questions new sanctions on Russia to preserve ceasefire talks
U.S. President Donald Trump said he is reluctant to impose new sanctions on Russia, warning that such measures could jeopardize efforts to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Russia has accused Ukraine, with backing from some European countries, of taking actions that threaten ongoing peace talks between the two nations. These direct talks, held on May 16 for the first time in over three years, ended without a ceasefire agreement.
Russia’s defence ministry claims Ukraine increased drone and missile strikes on Russian territory starting May 20, using Western-supplied weapons and hitting civilian areas. It says Russian defences intercepted over 2,300 drones in a week.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has also reported a surge in Russian attacks, including a large-scale missile strike over the weekend.
