EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said Monday that Brussels is committed to reaching a “constructive” trade agreement with the US.
In a post on X after his call with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Sefcovic said both sides are maintaining regular contact to keep talks moving.
His comments come after US President Donald Trump recently announced a planned 50% tariff on EU goods, citing stalled negotiations. The tariff, originally set for June 1, was pushed to July 9 after a call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Trump said von der Leyen requested the delay and promised that talks would begin quickly, calling the extension “a privilege.” Von der Leyen echoed the urgency, writing that the EU is ready to move “swiftly and decisively” in what she described as the world’s most important trade relationship.
