French President Emmanuel Macron said U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had a positive and constructive conversation about trade.
Speaking during a visit to Vietnam, Macron expressed hope that this could lead to lower tariffs and better trade between the U.S. and Europe. Macron also added that using tariffs isn’t the right way to fix trade issues.
An EU spokesperson confirmed that von der Leyen had called Trump over the weekend. Their phone call helped restart trade talks and led Trump to cancel a planned 50% tariff on EU goods. Instead, both sides now have until July 9 to work out a deal.
