Swiss authorities have confirmed that five skiers were found dead on the slopes of the Rimpfischhorn mountain, near the luxury Alpine resort of Zermatt. The discovery was made after abandoned skis were reported at an altitude of around 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), prompting a large-scale air and ground search.
The Valais cantonal prosecutor’s office stated on Sunday that the bodies were recovered near the Adlergletscher glacier, close to the Italian border in southwestern Switzerland. According to Air Zermatt, three of the victims were found amid avalanche debris several hundred meters below the location of the skis, while the remaining two were located higher up the 4,199-meter peak.
The identities of the deceased have yet to be confirmed, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. Zermatt is a renowned ski destination, particularly popular among wealthy visitors from the UK and across Europe.
