Two staff members from the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., were shot and killed outside an event at the Capital Jewish Museum on Wednesday night, in what officials are calling a targeted and deeply disturbing act of violence. A suspect is currently in custody.
The shooting occurred near 3rd and F Streets NW, in close proximity to the museum, an FBI field office, and the U.S. attorney’s office, according to law enforcement and media reports. Authorities confirmed that the victims, a man and a woman, were shot at close range while attending a Jewish cultural event at the museum.
Tal Naim Cohen, spokesperson for the Israeli embassy, confirmed the victims were embassy personnel. “We are shocked and grieving the loss of two of our colleagues who were senselessly killed during a peaceful gathering,” Cohen said.
Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith said the suspect was apprehended at the scene and had been observed pacing outside the museum prior to the event. While in custody, the suspect reportedly chanted "Free Palestine, Free Palestine," though authorities have not yet formally attributed a motive.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the deaths of the two embassy staff members in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share. We will bring this depraved perpetrator to justice,” she wrote.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that his agency was coordinating closely with the Metropolitan Police Department. “Please pray for the victims and their families,” he posted on X.
The attack has drawn swift condemnation from Israeli officials. Danny Danon, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, called the shooting “a depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.” He added, “Harming diplomats and the Jewish community is crossing a red line. We are confident that U.S. authorities will take strong action.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro were reportedly on the scene. The Metropolitan Police Department has not yet released additional details and said a press conference would be held shortly to provide further information.
As the investigation unfolds, officials are examining whether the shooting was politically or ideologically motivated. Increased security measures are expected at diplomatic and Jewish community sites in the D.C. area.
The Israeli embassy has not yet released the names of the victims, and authorities are continuing to notify their families.
