Hundreds of roof tiles fell from the Drum Tower in Fengyang County, Anhui province, China, narrowly missing visitors.
The Drum Tower, known as China’s largest, was originally built in 1375 during the Ming Dynasty and extensively rebuilt in 1995.
Local officials have secured the area and moved bystanders to safety. An investigation is underway to examine the design and construction of the recent repair project, with experts called in to assist.
The tower remains closed for repairs, and authorities will announce a reopening date once the work is completed.
Fengyang County is historically significant as the birthplace of the Ming Dynasty’s founding emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, also known as the Hongwu Emperor.
