Hungary has approved a bill to begin its year-long withdrawal from the International Criminal Court.
Hungary’s parliament has passed a bill initiating the country’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), marking a significant shift in its stance on international justice. Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government accused the ICC of losing impartiality and becoming politicized, especially after the court issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The decision, announced in early April following Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary, drew concern from the ICC’s Presidency of the Assembly of State Parties.
Netanyahu praised Hungary’s move as a "bold and principled decision." According to international protocol, Hungary’s exit will become official one year after the UN Secretary-General receives formal notification.
