Lithuania has taken legal action against Belarus at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Minsk of organizing irregular migrant crossings and violating international obligations.
According to a statement from Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry, there has been a sharp increase in the number of irregular migrants entering European Union countries via Belarus over the past year.
The statement alleges that Belarusian state-owned companies have increased flights from the Middle East and other regions to Belarus, directly facilitating the migrant flow.
Lithuania claims that the Belarusian government violated a United Nations protocol against human trafficking by land, sea, and air. As a result, Lithuania has filed a lawsuit against Belarus at the ICJ.
The statement also highlights that Belarusian border authorities have refused to cooperate with Lithuanian officials to prevent illegal crossings.
Lithuania is demanding that Belarus be held responsible for breaching international law and that full compensation be paid for the damages caused by these violations.
