Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Rome on Saturday, calling it a “good meeting” focused on peace efforts and military cooperation.
Zelenskyy thanked Canada for its steady support, calling it “a real friend of Ukraine.” He said the priority now is increasing pressure on Russia to push it toward ending the war.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said they discussed new sanctions, including energy-related measures and penalties targeting Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
The two leaders also talked about boosting military cooperation and expanding the “Coalition of the Willing,” a group supporting Ukraine’s defense.
Zelenskyy said he welcomed Canada’s invitation to the G7 summit and looks forward to hosting Carney in Kyiv.
While in Rome, the Ukrainian president also met Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter. Their talks covered humanitarian aid, school safety, and Ukraine’s long-term reconstruction.
He said they focused on the need for a ceasefire, pressure on Moscow, demining efforts, school meal programs, and building shelters for students.
