Ukraine’s gas reserves hit 11-year low

Ukraine's gas reserves have reached their lowest levels in over a decade, with storage facilities less than 20% full as of May 11.

Gas reserves in Ukraine's storage facilities are at their lowest levels in over 11 years, totaling 6 billion cubic meters (bcm) as of May 11, according to the analytical company ExPro. The decline comes after increased gas withdrawals and imports during the winter and spring, prompted by damage to production facilities in the east.

ExPro reported that Ukraine’s storage capacity is currently less than 20% full, a significant drop compared to 31.7% on the same date in 2024.

Projections indicate that Ukraine’s reserves could reach 6.6 bcm by the end of May. However, to prepare for the 2025/26 winter season, the country may need to import up to 6.3 bcm of gas.

State energy company Naftogaz is in discussions with the government and international financial institutions to secure €1 billion ($1.1 billion) for purchasing over 2 bcm of gas. Additionally, Naftogaz has arranged the delivery of 300 million cubic meters (mcm) of American LNG through Poland’s Orlen.
