China on Tuesday dismissed U.S. accusations over fentanyl trafficking, saying the crisis is an issue for the United States to resolve.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China had shown goodwill in counter-narcotics efforts, but the U.S. had responded with tariffs on Chinese goods under the pretext of the fentanyl issue. “Fentanyl is the U.S.’ problem, not China’s. The responsibility to solve it lies with the U.S. itself,” Lin said, according to state-run Global Times.
He added that the U.S. actions had undermined cooperation and harmed China’s interests. “If the U.S. is sincere about cooperation, it should stop smearing China and shifting blame,” he said.
The remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed China had agreed to stop fentanyl shipments to the U.S. He has repeatedly blamed China, along with Canada and Mexico, for contributing to a drug crisis that has caused over 100,000 deaths in the U.S. last year. Trump also imposed 20% tariffs on Chinese imports, linking them to anti-drug efforts.
