Over 100 people have died after severe flooding struck a village near Lake Tanganyika in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), exacerbating the region's ongoing challenges.
Flooding in the village of Kasaba, located near Lake Tanganyika in eastern DRC, has claimed the lives of over 100 people, according to local officials. The incident occurred between Thursday and Friday, when torrential rains and strong winds caused the Kasaba River to overflow, flooding the area. The region, still under the administration of Kinshasa, is not controlled by the M23 rebels, who have been intensifying their offensive in eastern DRC since the beginning of the year. Despite the confirmed death toll of 62, local authorities fear that the number of casualties could be higher. The affected area is isolated, with no mobile phone network and limited access via Lake Tanganyika, complicating the delivery of humanitarian aid.
