The 10th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilisations commenced in Cascais, Portugal, bringing together Heads of State, delegations, and civil society groups from over 100 nations.
Centred on the theme United in Peace: Restoring trust, reshaping the future, the event opened with a forward-looking declaration and discussions on fostering intercultural and interfaith understanding.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed gratitude to Portugal for hosting the three-day forum, highlighting the importance of unity in overcoming divisions. "Our common fate unites us more than our differences divide us," he stated, underscoring the Alliance's mission to champion humanity’s shared values.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa celebrated Portugal's role as a global bridge, praising its history of tolerance and openness. The high-level Group of Friends meeting featured participation from Portugal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Paulo Rangel, UNAOC High Representative Miguel Ángel Moratinos, and co-sponsors Spain and Türkiye.
Mr. Guterres called for increased contributions to the Alliance’s Voluntary Trust Fund, emphasising the urgency of combating rising hatred and intolerance.
