The U.S. House will debate the MEGOBARI Act, a bipartisan bill proposing sanctions on Georgian officials and offering aid if Tbilisi shifts from anti-Western policies, following Georgia’s adoption of a controversial foreign agents law.

A bipartisan bill, known as the MEGOBARI Act, is set for discussion in the U.S. House of Representatives.

It proposes targeted sanctions on senior Georgian officials but also offers benefits such as visa liberalization, economic assistance, and security cooperation, provided that Georgia moves away from anti-Western policies.

The bill was introduced after Georgia passed a controversial foreign agents law. While U.S. lawmakers emphasize that the bill is meant to support democracy, Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, has criticized it as unfriendly.

The legislation has already cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and now awaits a full vote in Congress.
