U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to visit the White House within the next week to discuss a potential trade deal.
Speaking after a Cabinet meeting, Trump said Carney had called him on Tuesday following his election win. “He called me up yesterday – he said let’s make a deal,” Trump told reporters. “He couldn’t have been nicer and I congratulated him.”
The U.S. president described Canada’s recent election outcome as “a very mixed signal,” calling the result tight and complicated, but stopped short of criticising Carney directly.
Trump’s remarks signal a possible thaw in trade relations, as both leaders prepare for talks amid ongoing tariff disputes and economic uncertainty.
