U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions following last week’s deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, the State Department said on Wednesday.

Rubio held separate calls with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He expressed strong support for India’s fight against extremism, while also urging Pakistan to assist in the investigation.

The attack killed over two dozen people and reignited regional friction between the nuclear-armed neighbours. India blames Pakistan-linked militants, while Islamabad has denied involvement and called for a neutral probe.

Rubio’s outreach signals Washington’s concern over rising instability in South Asia and its push to prevent further escalation.
